“My cloud is slow.” It’s a phrase we hear often, and a very real frustration. But before concluding anything, you have to look at the whole path your data travels. Because the speed you feel does not depend only on the servers: it depends on every link between your office and your infrastructure.
Perceived speed plays out along the whole path
When you open an application, your data travels: from your workstation, through your local network, then your internet link, to the infrastructure that hosts the service, and back. Each of these segments can add delay or lose information. An ultra-fast server at the end of a saturated internet link will still deliver a disappointing experience.
That is why you cannot judge performance at a glance. You have to measure the entire path.
Three metrics that make the difference
Network quality comes down mostly to three indicators:
- Latency: the time for data to make the round trip. The lower it is, the more instant everything feels.
- Jitter: the variation in that delay from one packet to the next. It is the number-one enemy of voice and video: a steady delay is barely noticeable, while a delay that keeps jumping makes a conversation choppy.
- Packet loss: when data simply does not arrive and has to be resent. The result: slowdowns, drops, applications that “freeze”.
For telephony and video conferencing, we often add the MOS score, a rating that reflects the perceived quality of the voice. Together, these metrics explain the vast majority of disappointing cloud experiences.
Why the problem is often invisible
The trap is that these problems are intermittent. A shared internet link degrades at peak hours, then returns to normal. An application “worked yesterday” and drags today. Without continuous measurement, you end up guessing, and often blaming the wrong link.
