📰 The multi-cloud mirage: when the web giants hold you digital hostage

By Pierre-Étienne Côté, Rézau

You've been sold the dream of an interconnected, fluid world, where businesses juggle multiple cloud providers like modern conductors. Microsoft Azure, AWS, Google Cloud... A magical trio, supposed to offer you unprecedented flexibility.

But behind this marketing veneer, a completely different reality emerges: that of a carefully orchestrated digital imprisonment.

🔐 From closed clouds... to invisible chains

In practice, the major platforms impose closed, proprietary environments. Their tools are designed to work only within their own ecosystem. And if you get the urge to migrate elsewhere, be prepared to pay: egress fees skyrocket as soon as you try to regain control of your data.

Add to this a deliberate complexity - unclear documentation, tightly woven technical dependencies - and you have a veritable golden trap.

🕵️ A revealing case: the FTC in the Microsoft case

Last November, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced an investigation into Microsoft's cloud practices. The company is suspected of imposing licensing conditions that severely limit the possibility of migrating out of Azure. Customers are said to be stuck, faced with price hikes, exorbitant exit fees, and technical obstacles that make any change of environment virtually impossible.

This case study is a perfect illustration of what many organizations are experiencing: confinement disguised by promises of agility.

🎭 Multi-cloud? An illusion of freedom

What should be synonymous with agility becomes a nightmare of dependency. The promised interoperability fades into the background, replaced by a logic of lock-in. And let's not forget: who controls the infrastructure, controls the rules. Today, it's restrictive policies. Tomorrow, it will be arbitrary price hikes.

Rézau: a free, sovereign, Québec alternative

At Rézau, we reject this closed logic. We believe in a cloud that belongs to those who use it.

✔️ Open, interoperable and portable infrastructure
✔️ Compatible with your existing tools (on-premise, hybrid or in other Clouds)
✔️ Based on proven technologies : VMware, Veeam, Zerto
✔️ Hosted locally in Quebec, carbon-neutral and sovereign
✔️ No dependence on a single supplier

Because the cloud should be a lever for freedom, not an instrument of control.
